Abstract

Managing inventories efficiently is a key factor for effective supply chain management. The area of inventory management has received significant attention in both academic and practitioner fields. Several tools and techniques have been developed and applied for managing inventories across the entire supply chain in order to reduce costs and improve efficiency. This paper presents the application of a well‐established model for managing the made‐to‐stock inventories at a large multinational pharmaceutical company. The model effectively incorporates both demand and supply variability into the safety stock evaluations. A comparative analysis between the proposed and existing models is performed by utilizing data from four production plants and the resulting cost benefits are presented. The paper concludes with recommendations for managing the safety stocks of the company by discussing various strategic and operational policies.

Abstract

This chapter addresses the impact of gendered social capital in developing countries to understand the barriers and opportunities to women's entrepreneurship with social capital development and also to examine factors influencing the development of social capital for women and how the identified factors benefit the creation of their entrepreneurial activities. This study follows a systemic literature review to achieve the purpose of the research by examining the selected articles in both English and Turkish, followed by factor comparison between developing, developed countries, and world datasets obtained from Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) database. The finding shows that social capital strongly impacts the entrepreneurial activities among women entrepreneurs in developing countries, especially in Turkey. Although the academic and practical studies on this field were started about two decades ago in Turkey, it has faced a radical increase in last 5 years and many practitioners and scholars working on these concepts. The clusters in English and Turkish resources are almost the same; however, the density and number of key terms are much lower in Turkish literature which shows a gap for Turkish researchers to publish more in this field to examine variables for better view about women entrepreneurship and social capital related to it.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to understand the possible role of critical accounts of management in a developing country like Turkey, when the origin of the dominant critical theories is the global North, particularly Europe.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a broadly historical and institutional approach, as well as the local experiences of the first author.

Findings

On the basis of the discussion the authors suggest that current forms of critical management are unlikely to find a home in Turkey for various reasons, hence, they argue that there is a need for local knowledge production rather than importation.

Originality/value

This paper presents a view of what it means to be “critical” from the perspective of a developing country, and a consideration of the role of a critical scholar in a context in which local priorities might be more important than theoretical elaboration.

The issue of training and appointment of school administrators has consumed substantial attention from educational scholars for several decades. The literature has witnessed a growing amount of research effort in investigating and identifying the effective ways of training and appointing school principals. However, there are also political, social and cultural aspects to this endeavour, which potentially influences the practices pertaining to training and appointment of school principals. This chapter represents scholarly efforts to discuss issues on the training and appointment of school administrators in Turkey within its historical and political background. Thus, first, it focuses on the historical journey of the field of educational administration in Turkey. This journey has been categorised under three phases: The Ottoman Era, Early Years of Turkish Republic and the 1950s Onwards. Second, this chapter discusses school principalship in Turkey with a specific focus on political and legal dimensions. Finally, the chapter ends with an overall evaluation of the practices and policies pertaining to school administration curriculum in Turkey.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the effect of fly ash reinforcement ratio (Rr) and sintering temperature (T) on the transverse rupture strength (TRS), hardness and density of fly ash reinforced bronze-based composite materials by using multi-objective Taguchi technique, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The bronze-based composite materials containing 5, 10 and 15 Wt.% fly ashes were prepared by using spark plasma sintering carried out under a pressure of 35 MPa, at 750, 800 and 850 °C for 3 min. Sintering temperature and fly ash reinforcement ratio were considered as input parameters; the TRS, hardness and density were considered as output parameters. Experiments were designed according to Taguchi L9 orthogonal array. Multi signal-to-noise ratio (MSNR) was computed to define the optimal process parameters. ANOVA was conducted to detect the importance of the input parameters for the process performance. Moreover, the linear model was developed for predicting the performance parameters by using regression analysis.

Findings

Fly ash can be a good alternative as reinforcement to reduce the cost for composite materials. Optimal process parameters had obtained 850°C sintering temperature and 5 per cent reinforcement ratio by using multi-objective Taguchi technique. The per cent contributions of the control factors on the performance parameters had obtained sintering temperature (95.78 per cent) and fly ash reinforcement ratio (3.00 per cent) with ANOVA. The obtained results indicate that the sintering temperature was found to be the dominant factor among controllable factors. However, the reinforcement ratio showed an insignificant effect.

Originality/value

It has been indicated that multi-objective Taguchi technique and regression analysis are effective and powerful tools in modeling and simultaneous optimization of quality characteristics for composite materials.

Purpose

This study aims to analyse how and to what extent stakeholder interaction for sustainability is implemented in organisations and the linkages to the overarching interaction efforts.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was conducted in the context of seaports. To examine interaction activities with stakeholders for sustainability and how they are implemented, the study uses content analysis of sustainability reports.

Findings

The results show that the majority of ports recognise the importance of stakeholder interaction to create value and guide organisational sustainability; however, it is implemented to varying levels and degrees, which affects the form and extent of the overarching interaction efforts. The paper proposes four categories of implementing stakeholder interaction, showing the linkages to the number of stakeholder groups involved, sustainability dimensions covered and interaction approaches used.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to sustainability, stakeholder and management literature by highlighting different levels of implementation of stakeholder interaction for sustainability and its linkages to overarching efforts that may affect the sustainable development of an organisation. The results of this study provide a better understanding of stakeholder interaction within organisational sustainability approaches and implementation in sustainability-oriented business models. As organisations seek to increase their sustainability performance, these insights may be useful for both academia and practice.

Abstract

It is seen that emotional intelligence, which is the subject of research in many disciplines, especially psychology and social sciences, is one of the prominent concepts. Emotional intelligence has become a sought-after feature especially for today's leaders. It is possible to say that emotional intelligence is an important feature for leaders in the energy sector as well as for leaders in other fields. This study aims to determine how and to what extent emotional intelligence has an effect on leadership characteristics in today's conditions where the need for leadership is increasing. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the effects of emotional intelligence levels of managers in the energy sector on leadership. For this purpose, hypotheses have been developed, and a research has been conducted on managerial employees in an enterprise operating in the energy sector in order to test the hypotheses. In the study, the effects of emotional intelligence dimensions such as optimism, use of emotions, and evaluation of emotions on leadership were measured by analyzing the data obtained as a result of the questionnaire application. SPSS package program was used for statistical analysis of the data. According to the results of the research, it was determined that effective leadership increased as optimism/mood regulation increased. Similarly, as the evaluation of emotions increased, effective leadership increased.

Abstract

Purpose

Building on resource dependence theory and contingency theory (CT) and focusing on an emerging market setting, this study investigates how demographic board diversity (BD) influences the export intensity (EI) of firms listed on Borsa Istanbul (BIST), with the moderating effect of firm size, as a contingency factor, on this interaction.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 65 exporting firms listed on the BIST Industrials Index, this study explores how demographic attributes of board members, represented by the board diversity index (BDI), affects EI by employing panel data analysis over the period of 2016–2020.

Findings

The results suggest that there is a negative relationship between BD and EI, but firm size has a positive moderating effect on the association of BD and EI, indicating that large firms with diverse boards are more prone to access foreign markets and make export. The findings further indicate that board size and CEO duality have a negative and significant effect on EI, while marketing intensity has a positive and significant impact.

Research limitations/implications

The sample covers only public companies listed on the BIST Industrials Index, and the impact of board characteristics on the EI is analyzed for a limited time frame, i.e. from 2016 to 2020.

Practical implications

The findings help business executives better understand the contribution of the firm size on the interaction of BD and EI and offers valuable insights to companies to gain a competitive edge in international markets.

Originality/value

The study provides evidence on the effects of board attributes on the EI from the perspective of emerging countries. It also helps to gain a deeper understanding of how board dynamics contribute to the internationalization of companies.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of board demographic diversity on the dividend payout policy in Turkish capital markets.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of 67 non-financial companies listed on Borsa Istanbul 100 index from 2013 to 2018, this study examines the influence of board demographic diversity on dividend payout policies in Turkish capital markets. The authors also create a Demographic Board Diversity Index (DBDI) to estimate the composite cognitive diversity. The authors use dividend payment probability, dividend payout ratio, and dividend yield to measure the dividend policy and employ panel logit and tobit regression models.

Findings

The results indicate that diversity in nationality, experience and educational background play an influential role in encouraging companies to pay high dividends, while gender, tenure and age diversity are insignificant in affecting dividend payments. The findings also suggest that the DBDI positively affects the companies in formulating the dividend payout policies. Finally, the findings show that the family-owned companies with diverse board members have a negative influence on dividend payment intensity.

Originality/value

The results offer valuable insights for companies and policymakers in emerging markets to develop a more refined governance structure accommodating board demographic diversity attributes to mitigate agency conflicts between controlling and minority shareholders through setting up effective dividend payout policies.

Abstract

Purpose

Food experience is gaining importance in the increase of sustainable competitiveness of tourism businesses, hence the importance of food consumption measurement in the context of recent gastronomic trends. However, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is not any appropriate scale to measure food consumption in the context of recent gastronomic trends. This study aims to fill this gap by developing and validating a scale that tends to measure tourists’ food preferences.

Design/methodology/approach

This is an explorative study with its unique construction and methodological approach. More specifically, scale development procedures were followed through reviewing the literature and gathering the opinions of 20 experts, and then the primary data were collected through the survey applied to 248 foreign visitors to Turkey. Finally, the subsequent survey was applied to 628 foreign visitors to Turkey for the sake of validity.

Findings

This study reveals a scale and validates it. The scale development and validation processes resulted in a three-factor model with 14 items to assess food consumption tendencies: modernist cuisine tendencies, fusion cuisine tendencies and local cuisine tendencies.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to the relevant knowledge accumulation by developing and validating a scale measuring food consumption tendencies within the frame of recent gastronomic trends. The authors hope to broaden understanding and utilization of the tendencies and trends by both stakeholders in the tourism industry and academic circles.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first food consumption scale development and validation attempts within the frame of recent gastronomic trends. Considering this, it is hoped that the outcomes are unique and lead academia and practitioners in further research.
